Electric vehicle charger station opened in Adelaide

South Australia’s first “Tesla supercharger” points for electric vehicles opened on 27 October on Franklin St between The Joinery and the new Bus station – “the start of a state-wide charging network the company promised as part of the deal to win the State Government’s “world’s largest battery” tender”.

Tesla’s Elon Musk included 50 charging stations as part of the negotiations to build the battery.

Westgate Tunnel hearings nothing but concerns

Since I started as the FoE & PTNT Sustainable Cities campaigner I have been continually shocked as I learn more about the Transurban $5.5 billion mega-toll road proposed for Melbourne’s West.

What started as a much needed proposal to get noisy, poisonous trucks off the residential streets of Melbourne’s inner West has now morphed into a crazy plan to lock the West into a car dependent future. Titled a tunnel, it actually consists of a 12-lane toll way, short tunnel, 3 giant bridges across the Maribyrnong River, then an 18-lane double-decker road leading to spaghetti interchanges and flyovers.

For the last few weeks, I have joined concerned residents from the west at the environmental effects (EES) hearings of the project.

Here, with the lawyers and the bureaucrats, ordinary citizens are trying to digest the 10,000 pages of environmental effects information in an insultingly short time. Many of the representatives are volunteers – residents and community groups that don’t have dedicated employees or professional experts to untangle the volume of information within the documents.

As Rosa McKenna from Better West – Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group says “the government and Transurban are trying to push this project though, but we know it is wrong for so many reasons: shifting truck traffic onto other inner west streets in Hobsons Bay, with the health and safety implications, and locking us into decades more of road based infrastructure”.…

Report back – Diesendorf Renewables Talk at the Conservation Council

A great talk last night In Conversation with Professor Mark Diesendorf at the Conservation Council, letting us know a roadmap to SA becoming 100% renewable in 15 years. He explained why nuclear is definitely the wrong way to go.

The Conservation Council’s latest report shows we can build on SA’s world-leading success and get to 100% renewables in just 15 years!

Conservation SA commissioned leading energy expert Dr Mark Diesendorf to investigate the feasibility of 100% renewable electricity for South Australia by 2030. The report finds that this is entirely achievable even without supportive Federal Government policies.

Most exciting is that we don’t need to wait for a supportive Federal Government: to seize this opportunity we just need our State Government to act.

Foe Submission to the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission Terms of Reference

SA Premier Jay Weatherill recently announced a Royal Commission into the nuclear fuel cycle and gave the public one week to make submissions into the terms of reference.

He says he is motivated by concerns over climate change and the state of SA’s economy.

The royal commission will look at uranium enrichment, nuclear power and a nuclear waste dump. Environment groups are calling for it to include issues with existing uranium mining, legacy waste sites, export markets and weapons proliferation as well as a close examination of the impact of a proposed dump on remote communities. We also call for a full economic analysis of nuclear power in relation to renewables.

A group of people who want to work together over the next year of the royal commission is forming. Meetings will be hosted by the Conservation Council at their new HQ 111 Franklin St Adelaide (the old bus station, next to the new bus station).  The group is currently meeting on Tuesdays, please contact Robyn for more information robyn.wood@foe.org.au

Yellowcake Uranium oxide accident at Outer Harbor

Yellowcake uranium oxide is transported by truck from the Olympic Dam mine at Roxby Downs in South Australia, through Port Adelaide to the docks at Outer Harbor, to be loaded onto ships for export.  The yellowcake is packed inside sealed drums in a shipping container on the truck.

Early in the evening of Friday October 3rd 2014 an accident occurred at Outer Harbor.  When the shipping container was being unloaded from the truck it slipped and fell to the ground.  Emergency services were called, but as this was an accident involving dangerous goods and Outer Harbor didn’t have the facilities to open the container to check for spillage, the Environment Protection Agency was also called in to advise.  After checking the container with a geiger counter, the EPA determined that there was no radioactivity measurable outside the container.
